Tiny Tapeout Workshop

Are you interested in learning more about chips and excited about designing your own? We are too! Join us for our Tiny Tapeout workshop, design your own chip, and be part of the first run (planned for September 2025) to have the workshop designs manufactured on a chip. Our workshop is for students (high school and university), enthusiasts and anyone excited about designing their own chip.
If you're a high school student interested in designing and making your own chip we encourage you to sign up and tell your teacher about us. If you're in Zurich, nearby, or even further away but can travel to Zurich for the afternoon, we'd be glad to save a seat for you and your classmates!
Overview:
The goal of the workshop is to make integrated circuit (IC) design more accessible to the Swiss public and engage high school students with chip design and study paths in electrical engineering. We will make a collective design (with open-source tools) that will be manufactured on one chip, and together with IHP, we’ll have a first tape-out in IHP130 planned for September 2025, which will include our workshop designs.
When: Friday, June 27, 2025, 13:30–17:30, followed by pizza and networking at 18:00, for those who can join.
Where: ETH Zurich: CAB G51 (lecture hall) & ETZ D61.1/D61.2/D96.1 (computer labs) [Location: CAB building | Location: ETZ building]
What: We'll look at how transistors work and design of a simple digital circuit, and then we'll dive into creating the chip layout and adding your design to the chip.
Language: Our teaching language will be in English, but we will have many Teaching Assistants to help out and most of them speak other languages, including German.
Prerequistes: No prior knowledge is necessary, however you need to be able to use a computer and internet. We will be using web-based tools, and you will need external page a GitHub account.
What to bring: We will be working in the computer lab and have computers for you to use, but feel free to bring your own laptop if you prefer. A mouse is strongly advised.
Food: We will have a coffee break during the workshop and pizza afterwards.
Registration: The registration for this workshop is now closed.
We'll be planning more workshops in the near future, so stay tuned & check back on our website for the next workshop dates!

More about our workshop:
Together with Tiny Tapeout and IHP, SwissChips is helping to make integrated circuit (IC) design more accessible, so everyone can get involved, and especially to get young people excited about chip design. Using all open source tools, we'll design a chip over an afternoon and have it manufactured. Each workshop will be a (Tiny) step towards democratizing chip design and helping to inspire the next generation of talents.
The first public Tiny Tapeout open source shuttle for IHP will be sponsored by SwissChips for all Swiss participants. Even if you can't join the workshop, you can submit your designs for the shuttle planned in Sept 2025.
external page Tiny Tapeout is an educational project that makes it easy to get your designs manufactured on a real chip, and is leading our workshop. You can read more about Tiny Tapeout on their website.
Terms and Conditions of Registration: Participants of the SwissChips & Tiny Tapeout workshop should be aware that during or in conjunction with the event, video recordings or photos may be taken in which they appear. They agree neither to demand financial compensation nor to restrict the use of such media.
